Note: Toasting nuts brings out their flavor and makes them crisp. It is easy to do. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place nuts, in a single layer, on an ungreased baking sheet or pizza pan. Bake for 7 to 8 minutes, stirring halfway through baking time, or until nuts become fragrant and are lightly browned. (Watch nuts closely to prevent burning.) Cool nuts completely before chopping and adding to recipe.

Walking for Weight Loss

Posted by admin in Medical Portal

I’ve been watching too much TV lately. I think am suffering from paid commercial overdose.

Everything from juicers and foodsavers to inflatable exercise equipment and treadmills have been on TV lately. Some of the stuff looks pretty good. However there are some things you can do to lose weight that will cost you nothing but a little effort.

One of the best things you can do is simply walk. That’s right, walk. Walking has a lot of health benefits, including weight loss. Walking a mile will burn approximately 100 calories, depending on your present weight. For most folks, walking a mile is doable. Running or jogging a mile is a lot harder on the body.

Studies have recently shown that you don’t even need to do all of your walking at once. If your goal is to walk 30 minutes a day, you can even break it down into 3 ten minute sessions.

That means you can even do it in front of the television while watching infomercials! I’ve even seen video tapes to walk away your poundage.

Here are a couple of ways to get started.

First, buy a pedometer, wear it wherever you go. The steps you take throughout the day count towards your weight loss goal. There is actually a program called 10,000 steps. The more steps you take, the more your body and waistline benefit.

Second, just get started. Go for a walk. If it’s too hot or too cold outside, walk in place in front your television.

So what are you waiting for? Go outside for a walk, or turn on the TV and watch your favorite infomercial and start walking off those inches!

Hints and Tips on Getting Publicity for Events

Posted by admin in Life Of Marketing

A) Background

Unfortunately local newspapers - relied on for so long as the mainstay of event publicity - are beset by falling circulations and deteriorating editorial quality. The old discussions about paid papers versus free papers seem very dated - now it is more a question of trying new ways of attracting visitors to events.

B) Today’s Publicity Plan

What you do will of course depend on your budget and who you want to attract. If you are serious about publicity you will at least consider carefully the following elements:

Posters:

Can be displayed in shop windows, on roadside verges (you may need council permission), on community/parish noticeboards and other suitable sites. Remember to take them down after your event - nothing turns off the public more than out-of-date posters which can rightly be defined as litter. A4 posters can be printed up on a home printer - but remember not to try and squeeze in too much detail - your graphics and type should be large.

Local Media (Advertising and Editorial):

Newspapers

No longer the only ganme in town of course, but still worthwhile. Two smaller adverts in What’s on over two weeks may well get better results than one larger one.

Radio and Television

You’ll need to think of a good angle to get editorial coverage

Parish and Community

Often cheap to advertise, and hungry for editorial copy provided it really is about local people or for a local cause.

Specialist Media:

If your event concerns fund-raising for a particular sector charity, or is likely to attract enthusiasist for a particular interest, then don’t forget to let any specilist magazines know well in advance. If suitable, you could suggest discounted entry or some other benefit to the editor as a Reader offer.

Direct Mail and Leaflets:

The Royal Mail offers some free lifestyle and demographic targetting services based on postcode sectors, but these will only be of use if your proposed drop is 50,000 items or more. You can organise leaflet drops through various delivery agencies, but if you operate very locally ask the Boy Scouts or similar groups to help in return for a donation.

Internet:

You’ll be using your own website if you have one. www.WhereCanWeGo.com is a must - it offers free listings of events, sortable by locality, date, and interest.

…and finally:

Tell everyone you know personally. Email. Telephone. Chat. And ask them to let their friends know too…

Fat Burning Food For Powerful, Natural Fat Loss

Posted by admin in Medical Portal

Some like it hot, others spicy. No matter how you look at shedding the pounds, nothing is more powerful than a strong natural diet, and some good old fashion exercise. Now with the supplement industry booming, there has been the introduction of thermogenic aids that some proclaim as hype, and others point to as life threatening. Most of the thermogenic supplements on the market are used to shed fat fast, especially in the realm of competitive bodybuilding. Here is a list of some of the most prominent thermogenic aids on the market (and some you may not have heard of), and studies that show their effects:

- Hydroxy Citric Acid (HCA): HCA is obtained from the rinds of the Garcinia fruit of South Asia. HCA does not affect the central nervous system like ephedera or caffeine. HCA prevents the conversion of carbohydrate into fat.

- Inosine: Inosine is in the family of nucleotide molecules known as purines. Together with pyramidines, purines make up the nitrogenous bases, which are the building blocks of DNA. Research has shown Inosine as stimulating enzyme activities in the liver. Other studies show that Inosine maintains ATP in bone marrow and enhances cardiovascular functioning. Inosine also assists in carbohydrate metabolism.

- Choline: Choline is a member of the B-complex group of vitamins. Some of its functions include building cell membranes; mobilizing fat, decreasing cholesterol, and helping the liver metabolize fats.

- Carnitine: Carnitine was first discovered around 100 years ago by Russian scientists. Carnitine is a water soluble substance, synthesized by the liver which requires the presence of other vitamins such as vitamins C, B6, B3, and iron to work most efficiently. Carnitine primarily stimulates the transport of long-chain fatty acids across the inner membranes of mitochondria. (Source: Embleton, P. Anabolic Primer, 1998)

There are a whole list of other supplements utilized by athletes and people wishing to shed pounds. The above list is all well and good, but what about when you have a hole in your pocket and can’t afford to fork out the thousands of dollars per year it takes to shed the pounds with supplements? Are there natural alternatives? Of course. Mother Nature has provided us with some super thermogenic foods to help you shed the pounds naturally, without forking out potentially thousands of dollars on overly priced (and sometimes overly hyped supplements). Here is a list:

- Garlic: It’s not about the breath it’s about burning the fat, and nothing is as potent as garlic. Garlic is a powerful antioxidant against lipid per oxidation. Add some to your food for a strong fat loss gain!

- Onions: Be it red or white, onions are a fantastic way of boosting your HDL (High Density Lipo Protein, basically good cholesterol) levels and also helps lower total cholesterol.

- Ginger: I love the Asian cuisine! Asian foods utilize a lot of ginger. Adding ginger to your foods is a fantastic way of helping you to reduce both blood and liver cholesterol.

- Chilli: Aye Curumba! Chillis are an awesome way of lowering blood cholesterols and triglycerides. Give Chilli a try to spice up your fat burning efforts. (Source: Richmond, W. FIA: Nutrition & Weight Management, 2001)

So spice it up for greater fat metabolism, and save money from overly priced supplements!

Banks Just Love Those Home Equity Loans

Posted by admin in Real Estate Tips + More

There are a number of great benefits to taking out a home equity loan; not least the opportunity to open a line of credit, pay existing debts or put your children through college, the list is endless. There are also positive tax benefits, if you’re unsure about this you should speak to your accountant before taking out a home equity loan. So in a world of greedy banks making billions of dollars a year, why do they like it when we take out a home equity loan?

The simply reason is that home equity loans are the “loan of the day”, they are very popular and as a result they make banks a lot of money. Another reason, and one that is perhaps more important, is that home equity loans are secured loans, secured on a tangible asset, your home. Therefore, there is less risk to the bank for lending you the money. This is great news for banks and its shareholders as they are making record profits with less risk. It’s a simple formula to the banks; they’ll lend you the money in return for an interest rate payment. If you fail to pay, they will take your property from under you and sell it, whatever happens they can not lose.

So as long as borrowers pay their home equity loan bills on time and they got what they wanted out of it, surely everyone is a winner, right? On paper, this certainly appears to be the case; however there is a growing concern that many people view the equity in their home as their spending money and are starting to fritter away, what in many cases is their only form of assets or savings. Experts argue that there needs to be more control on home equity loans and the reason for the loans.

Poor Customer Service - Are Your Customers Driving Away Other Customers

Posted by admin in Commerce Opps

Every customer you have is a word-of-mouth
advertiser for you. Unfortunately 90% of this free
advertising is negative. Your goal is to get
positive-word-of-mouth advertisers.

Think about it, how do you decide where to shop? Your chief consideration may be location or price, but service is a silent draw that cannot be overlooked.

Years ago we went to a get our oil changed at the Citgo station at Rochester and Hamlin in Rochester Hills. The owner was in tough competition with the established shop across Rochester Road. We were first in line and the shop really did achieve their time goal as we were pulling in the bay in just over 5 minutes. To our surprise the owner came to the window and offered us free pop because of the “long wait” on a hot day. He also offered lollipops to our children after getting our permission. It is now ten years later and every oil change on both cars have been done at his shop. What was his cost? Two cans of pop and two lollipops. To be honest I cannot tell you how his price compares to the shop across the street, but I don’t care. Anyone that takes care of the customer like he did on our first visit has integrity and places customer service as a top goal. Not only has he received our total business, we also told this story a hundred of times to friends and at conferences.

Word-of-mouth is a very powerful advertising tool. With competition as intense as it is today people are looking for ways to determine at which of the many resources available to spend their money.

The emphasis on word-of-mouth advertising is getting a lot of attention at colleges in and near Allentown, Pennsylvania. College freshmen can now go to several Internet sites to determine into which professors class they should strive. The sites list comments about the professors posted by former students. Although the colleges say the sites do not agree with the evaluations they are receiving at the end of the classes, the sites have increasing in the number of web hits they receive. According to Christina Gostomski of the Allentown Morning Call (May 16), students like the sites because they want to make sure they aren’t wasting tuition dollars.

Word-of-mouth advertising is also recognized by Google as having max impact, and they have the results to prove it. According to Forbes.com (May 22) the Internet advertising company built their new service, Adwords, on word-of-mouth advertising. “The response was so enthusiastic that by February 2002 Adwords had been extended to all Google listings. It grew to 100,000 bidders in ten months, and thousands more advertisers are still signing up.” according to Forbes.

Increasing positive-word-of-mouth requires that one is in tune with the customer. There are two facts that work against this free form of advertising:

1. Negative word-of-mouth advertising is ten times more common. Unfortunately people are more likely to talk bad than they are to talk well of an organization.

2. Unsatisfied customers are not likely to make their feelings known. While it is true that some are overly vocal, the majority tend to keep quiet.

To identify unsatisfied customer you must be alert to their tone of voice, how they walk out of your place of business, whether or not they look you in the eye, and (perhaps most importantly) does your place of business say, “Welcome, we’re glad you’re here!”

As for the vocally unhappy, conflict resolution skills are vitally important. A business person must be on there “A” game every time a conflict arises, and they must be equipped to handle the problem.

The type of word-of-mouth advertising that your organization receives is totally up to you. Now that you know you will receive word-of-mouth advertising, as evidenced by the college professors and Google, you must make a choice as to how prepared you will be to influence the ads themselves.

Feeding the Obsession

Posted by admin in Fishing Times

It all started with a casual phone call to check the day’s bite in Mosquito Lagoon. Bryan Pahmier, a friend and guide, from Titusville, mentioned that he was going to take his boat out to see if any cobia were near shore out of Port Canaveral. He was going solo, so another angler onboard to share the helm sounded great. A plan was hatched, but since the fun was to take place on a work day, a couple of calls were required to confirm that a get out of work pass would be endorsed by the boss.

The Pavlovian response the idea of cobia fishing brought on was deep rooted in a new found obsession that had bitten me deep, sight fishing with a fly rod. The idea of sinking a hook into the jaw of a new species suspended the realities of the real world, work would have to wait. The priorities of the next 18 hours would revolve around the quest to stalk, fool, fight, and land a pelagic species.

I found myself strolling into my favorite local fly outfitter a mere hour and a half later to sit down at the tying vise to make an attempt at creating what in my mind’s eye a cobia would find irresistible. Every Thursday evening a collection of kindred spirits wanders into the shop at closing time to sit and share war stories, share or learn a new fly pattern, or simply enjoy the company of fellow addicts. While I’ve never heard “Hello my name is…” at the gathering, it would be appropriate.

I found some bright strips of bunny zonker and matching flat waxed thread and took a seat. I decided that simple, yet bright was the plan I would work; a Technicolor eel my desired outcome.

Bryan and I launched his flats boat mid morning and headed out of the port to take the opportunity that relatively calm seas afforded us. I had never seen a cobia before, so the ideas of sight fishing for one on fly in my first encounter was truly exciting. As the throttle was advanced we slowly began cutting through the chop heading south looking for signs of life on the surface. The sun was steadily rising into the sky helping warm the waters and improving our visibility with each passing moment.

The cobia we were searching for are often found nearby to floating structure as well as swimming just beneath the surface. As such, anytime a piece of flotsam was seen or a turtle spotted we would adjust our course to investigate.

Shortly after eleven we spotted yet another turtle bobbing along on the surface nearly a quarter of a mile away. As we approached, we quickly spotted a nice size cobia lurking beneath the turtle. It was game time; the moment we had prepared for and hoped would present itself. The sight fishing opportunity for my first pelagic species had arrived.

The set-up for my first cast was ideal allowing the newly crafted fly to be placed just behind the resting turtle as the cobe lazily circled it against the clock. Almost instantly the fish keyed on the fly and approached to investigate. After following along for twenty or so feet the cobia was nearing our boat and I picked up the fly to try and prevent the fish from detecting our presence and sounding. As soon as the fly disappeared the fish made an about face and returned to the turtle The process repeated itself several times, with each repetition causing my stomach to tighten even more as my pulse accelerated. I began to feel the tremendous weight of doubt settling in as the fish appeared to be interested yet not hungry or fooled. That weight increased exponentially as the turtle sounded and disappeared into the depths.

Once the turtle disappeared, the cobia began to meander shifting some of the angst that was freshly created to Bryan as he maneuvered the skiff to position me for another shot at the now moving target. We were stalking now, attempting to place ourselves into a position that would again allow the fly to invite our quarry to eat.

My mind was reeling, trying to process what I needed to do to fool this beast that had shown keen interest in my offering no less that eight times yet not commit to rendering the fly a mid-day snack. The next cast would be different, no constant stripping with the fish in steady pursuit. I slowed my retrieve, only striping the fly mere inches at a time, keeping the fly 4 - 6 inches off its nose. My heart was about to explode, every nerve was on edge. As I approached the decision point where I would need to take the fly away to preserve our stealth, the fish exploded on the fly. Fish on!

After a strong run away from us, the fish went vertical, diving to the bottom where a tug of war would take place for the next half hour. As I was reveling in the follow and take, doubt again began to creep into my consciousness; would the fish be landed, could I close the deal?

Nearly thirty minutes later Bryan carefully gaffed a very tired adversary and brought it into the boat. We were ecstatic. The episode had joined us as one, allowing for our efforts to be rewarded, the obsession fed.

If you enjoy the teamwork that constitutes sight fishing a cobia, get out while they migrate past Central Florida’s coast and experience the euphoria it delivers. The day’s events are a memory I will cherish for years to come.

Larry L. Littrell lives in Central Florida and spends most of his free time in pursuit of inshore gamefish with fly rod in hand.

Home theater systems - the simple way

Some people feel uncomfortable if not frightened by shopping online especially EBay. I agree there are millions of scammers out there just waiting to pull one over on you. Well, you have another choice. You can always visit a pawnshop in your area. People in need of money often sell anything and everything to pawnshops including cheap home theater systems. Most of the time the pawnshop owners are pretty straightforward and won’t sell damaged equipment however you should be cautious anyway. Always check the condition of the system while in the pawnshop. Make the works or ask them if you can hook it up and test it out before making a purchase. You should also confirm that you can bring the item back if you are unsatisfied with it later.

If you feel uncomfortable buying use or refurbished systems then you can always use other ideas to low the overall cost of your system. It is easy to find the cheap home theater systems that fit your specifications. You should consider the features you must have and those you don’t care very much about. By cutting back on the features that you will never use you will end up saving yourself money in the long run. If you aren’t going to be watching a lot of DVDs then you more than likely won’t need surround sound. If you don’t need a six DVD disk change then drop it as well.

Living with Your Diet

Posted by admin in Medical Portal

Recently, I was reading about a diet plan where you throw everything out of your pantry. Although this sounds like great news for the supermarkets, over the short-term, this leaves very few choices for you to actually eat.

Can you exist on salad, topped with Flax seed oil dressing, for the rest of your life?

People believe that they must pay penance for their eating sins. Dietary and exercise torture seems to be good for the conscience and the prescription of the day. How else can we explain “off the wall” diets and “extreme” exercise programs?
Whatever happened to eating in moderation and using common sense? Even if you are eating a “diet cookie,” you can’t have all you want.

If you travel, or eat in restaurants frequently, you have to eat in moderation, space your meals out, carry healthy snacks, or visit the salad bar at your local supermarket. There are plenty of good choices, and it won’t cost you an “arm and a leg.”

When you eat, you shouldn’t feel stuffed after a meal. This slows down your digestive system, similar to the principle of a “log jam,” and you may not eat for six hours or more, depending upon the amount of food consumed. This is a time when your body is crying to go for a walk.

You should feel comfortably full every time you leave the table, and you should eat five or six times a day; three moderately-sized meals and at least two healthy snacks.

Sorry to say, diet cookies are rarely healthy. If they were of nutritional value, I would live on the Chocolate Chip Cookie Diet.

Now back to reality, if you love dessert, you can’t give it up for life. Depending on the state your health, you may have to seriously cut back. Therefore, consult with your family doctor, get a diet that makes sense, and please walk, swim, or exercise regularly.
