How The Credit Card System Works

Posted by admin in Great Mathematics Tips

Smart use of your credit cards is important, and it is not how many cards you possess.

If there are advantages to possessing many credit cards it is in their proper use, not in their dollars of potential credit.

Here’s how credit cards work:

Banks cooperate with each other to closely to track their cardholders, and most banks want to know how many credit cards you now have before they issue one of their own.

Banks share computer files to trade cardholder information. When a bank discovers you have too many cards (each bank has their own policy on how many cards are “too many”), they automatically reject your application.

Banks that offer the same card usually disallow repeat cards to a cardholder.

You normally may obtain only one card from an interconnected network of cooperating banks.

How does a bankcard system actually work?

When you apply for a credit card at your local bank, many events occur. While your local bank’s name is displayed on your credit card, odds are that your card was instead issued by a different bank.

Interconnected banks trade favors and reciprocate functions.

Banks also hire each other to perform different services to cut their overall costs.

Bank card systems are complicated.

First, they must accept new applications, obtain credit reports, and establish approved accounts.

Then the actual cards must be printed and embossed. Ongoing paperwork includes preparing and mailing billing statements, sales brochures, late payment notices, and other details that make a credit card program succeed.

Few banks undertake every function required to operate a credit card program. To avoid complicated and costly processes, some banks act as credit card agents for others. Usually smaller banks contract with the larger banks for card-related services.

The largest card processing centers usually handle accounting, credit checks, mailings, statements, collections, and administrative details for smaller banks.

The smaller banks pay, as a fee, a percentage of its annual credit volume. Both the large and small banks benefit from this relationship.

Bank networks commonly share parts of the credit card process.

One bank may offer applications; another may handle credit checks; a third (or fourth) bank the embossing and monthly statement function.

Major networks may have many lines of agent banks stretching out in a lengthy chain. Other networks may encompass only three or four agent banks.

So what happens if you simultaneously apply for credit cards from several local banks?

Although you may apply to different banks, many will be connected to the same major bank. This, of course, raises two possibilities:

1) The major bank will have a relationship with the agent banks that prevents the applicant from obtaining more than one card from the major bank. Even if you apply to twelve banks connected to the same major bank, the major bank will only issue one card.

All others are automatically cancelled as they enter the central computerized system. Your credit card will bear the name of the accepting bank. But in the process you generated potentially harmful numbers of inquiries on your credit report.

2) A major bank will issue several cards to the same individual if the agent bank assumes responsibility for your credit. The agent bank would then assume responsibility for any default in payment.

So before you apply for a credit card make sure that you do not already have one from that issuing bank.

Hurricanes and Music Pop Charts

Posted by admin in Music Hub

Are you a songwriter and find a tough time writing new songs? It is not easy to write a good one and it is hard to get in the right emotional and creative state in order to make a good song. In addition if you do not put the right melody with the right lyrics it will not work, it will not sell and no one will like it and good luck trying to get a local radio station to play it without you paying them.

I submit to you that when people fall on hard times or are involved in adversity in life that they can draw on the raw emotions of that time to get into a creative state to help them write great songs. Adversity builds character and adversity spurs on creativity.

It is almost as if necessity is the Mother of invention and extreme hardship is the Father of creativity. Can you use the destruction and devastation of an Atlantic tropical hurricane season to help you write a song, which will help people get through life?

Such a song is needed and if you are a good songwriter and you can get in the proper mood you will be able to write that perfect song. Perhaps during the next mandatory evacuation of the next large category or catastrophic hurricane you can tap into that raw emotion.

Perhaps if you fail to evacuate and you stock up and then go without tap water and power for four to six weeks while authorities try to repair the damage, that you can use this time to write a perfect song about hurricanes and adversity. Consider this in 2006.

Baby Instruments for Songwriters and Musicmakers

Posted by admin in Music Hub

Looking for a musical instrument to inspire you?

There are so many beautiful musical instruments around for musicmakers. I have a soft spot for baby instruments - beautifully crafted, easily stored and surprisingly cheap.

These small scale instruments - often called travel instruments, baby instruments or mini instruments - offer intimacy and easy handling to songwriters and musicmakers at the day job, crooners on the back porch and dreamers in small bedrooms!

The lower prices of baby instruments suit both professionals wanting a unique sound and beginners wanting a small instrument to play often

How can it be that something smaller is cheaper? From my experience of building model aeroplanes as a kid, ’smaller’ involves so much more effort. (Or was it just the glue?) But much of the baby instrument range is priced low enough to warrant building a little creche of ‘babies’. And that way they can play together when you’re busy.

The size of these travel musical instruments make it possible to have several in your life without clutter

Baby instruments fit discreetly in the corner of your workplace or studio allowing you to take a break and ‘have a blow’. (Imagine lawyers, truckies and childcare workers grabbing a moment to strum their baby mandos or strumsticks to ease tension and bring a little magic into the day!)

Baby instruments are not toys. They have a tangy sound each of their own by nature of the scale and materials used. I love the sweetness and intimacy that these little babies evoke. It’s the musical version of ‘oh she’s so beautiful’ usuually bestowed on little animals and humans!

Baby instruments help save songwriters and arrangers from ‘Writer’s Block’

For songwriters the perfect antedote to ‘writer’s block’ (we’ll talk about that myth another time) is to move between musical instruments to find a new insight and to release the ‘block’. So, widen your soundscape - go into unexplored territory.Often playing an instrument you are NOT proficient at leads you to exciting new places in your musicmaking. And we all know how great a teacher a chord book can be in helping us approximate ease and competence on our instruments!

Choose your baby musical instrument of choice and then something way out of your experience from guitars, basses, ukeleles, accordians, banjos and melodicas! Having a selection of beautiful baby instruments will keep you inspired for ages! And in the digital age of ’small is beautiful’ you’ll get lots of kudos for your socially relevant choice of a baby instrument. Yeah that’s right, you’ll be the point of interest wherever you go with your ‘baby’.

Depeche Mode Return to Their Roots With New Single Precious

Posted by admin in Music Hub

Precious is the beautiful first single from Depeche Mode and this is the maxi single for
the single release. Overall the remixes all complement the original version of this song
and the strongest ones are Sasha’s Spooky Mix - Edit and Sasha’s Gargantuan Vocal
Mix - Edit. Sasha has done an excellent job remixing this mellow vocal track and made
it very club friendly yet not making it too obnoxiously beat heavy. Although Sasha’s
remixes are quite heavy on the bass the beats are quite nice and the song has taken on
a much more electronic form than it is in it’s original version.

Michael Mayer’s Balearic Mix is yet another mellow remix and has a relaxed feel to it.
It’s mostly a vocal remix with a laidback feel to it.

The Misc. Full Vocal mix is just an extended version/edit of the original track. It
sounds good but I like the original much more as I am used to it. I like my remixes to
sound like remixes and this just does not sound like a remix.

The Misc. Crunch Mix is a little more upbeat than the other remixes but not as upbeat
as the Motor Remix. It’s a fun remix and quite nice to dance to.

The Motor Remix is the one remix on here that has basically increased the bpm’s of the
original version and made it a much more upbeat club friendly track. The mostly
instrumental remix is quite energetic and fierce sounding. Although it’s quite good I
still prefer the Sasha Spooky Mix - Edit over all the remixes on this maxi single.

Overall a good maxi single but not as strong as other maxi’s Depeche Mode have
released in the past.

How to Compose Using ABA Form

Posted by admin in Music Hub

ABA form is like a musical sandwich. You have the 2 slices of bread with the contrasting meat and cheese on the inside. Instead of bread and meat, you use musical materials. Perhaps an 8-bar phrase for the A section followed by a 4 or 8-bar phrase for the B section. A nice little musical sandwich.

A piece of music made from ABA form can last anywhere from 45 seconds to 5-6 minutes or longer DEPENDING ON HOW THE COMPOSER UTILIZES THE TOOLS OF REPETITION AND CONTRAST!

For example, I can take an 8-bar phrase, repeat that twice, play another 8 bars for the B section, then back to the A section again for another repeat (with variations of course). Now, how long will that last? It depends on tempo or how fast the piece moves through time. Most small ABA sections don’t last longer than 2-3 minutes. Why? Because if they were repeated for longer periods of time, the music would become dull and repetitious.

BUT, if we create another section of music - the C section, it provides the relief the ear is searching for and we can then repeat the entire thing again so the form would look like this: ABACABA. This form extends ABA and provides the necessary contrast to create longer pieces.

Famous Psychics - Helen Duncan

Posted by admin in Psychology

The Helen Duncan story is one that is both fantastic and sadly, very tragic. She was born in Scotland in 1898. Her greatest period of popularity was during the 1930’s and 1940’s when the was most in demand as a psychic. What she was most known for was holding séances in people’s homes where she would supposedly contact family members who had long gone to their graves.

In 1933 Duncan was accused of fraud when a policewoman successfully grabbed a vest that was supposed to be Helen’s spirit child helper. She was found guilty of fraud and fined ten pounds. In spite of this scandal, she continued to hold her séances until 1944 when one of them was raided by the police. A police officer tried to grab the ectoplasm that was coming from the medium, thinking it was just a white sheet, but he was unable to grab a hold of it. No sheet was actually found when other officers went through the room. Even though no evidence of fraud was discovered, Duncan and three others were ordered to appear at Portsmouth magistrates’ court. They were all charged with conspiracy.

They were refused bail, and Duncan spent four days in a British prison. The case was sent to the central criminal court at the Old Bailey. There, many charges were brought against her which included vagrancy and conspiracy, and believe it or not, the Witchcraft Act of 1735. This absolutely caused an uproar with Spiritualists. The trial lasted seven days. During that time many people testified on Duncan’s behalf. They each recalled many feats she performed. Duncan told one of her visitors that a family member had just died, and later it was confirmed that this person had died just two hours before the meeting. Many other claims were made to verify that Duncan was indeed legitimate.

Even though many attempts were made to prove Duncan’s ability, she was eventually sentenced to nine months in jail. After she finished serving her sentence, she returned to do her spiritual work. There were many accounts of her work as a medium. Many of the reports told of the actual appearances of those who had passed away.

In 1951, the Witchcraft Act of 1735 was finally done away with and in its place was put the Fraudulent Mediums Act. In 1956, the police raided one of Helen’s séances in Nottingham. They claimed to be searching for props and interrupted a séance right in the middle. Supposedly this interruption caused a great shock to Duncan by having the ectoplasm return to her body too quickly. A doctor was called to examine her. She became so ill that she had to return to Scotland to be with her family. In just five weeks after the raid she died. Many believe the raid to be the cause.

There are no definite conclusions to this very sad and tragic story. If she was the talented medium that many claimed she was then she did herself no good by adding fraudulent activities to her gifts. The truth is, we will never really know if she was a gifted psychic or just another con artist.

Reduce Your Stress By Removing Clutter From Your life

Posted by admin in Psychology

You can gain time and energy in your life. This can be done by spending a few minutes each day making your life simpler. “Downsizing” your life a little at a time will lower stress and bring you a sense of satisfaction.

You may be wondering what do I mean by “Downsizing”? There are times in life when you need to get rid of things. Things that clutter your life. Things that no longer have value to you and your family.

We all have a tendency to collect more than we really need. Some of us are collectors to the extent that we have a totally cluttered life. Others have a neat life, but still have more than they need stored away in the depths of their closets.

Once a year we need to go through our closets, garages, dresser drawers and boxes stashed in the attic and find out what we can get rid of.

There is a saying, “Get rid of what you do not want to make room for what you do want”. If you were to follow this advice, you would find your life less cluttered than it ever has been, or at least less cluttered than it has been in a long time.

Collecting too many things begin to weigh our lives down with so much stuff that we cannot get out from under it. If you have to make isles in your garage or storage shed to get to things or worse yet, you have to make isles inside your home to get to things, you need to make a decision to start sorting through your belongings and get rid of things you KNOW you will never use again.

Do you save clothes in hope of returning to the size you were when you stored them? This clothing can add up to boxes and boxes of things that will be out of style by the time you actually can wear them again.

You local charities can use donations of clothing. They can use good clothes to sell in their thrift shop and to help clothe the needy. They can even use holey and moth eaten clothing which they bale and send off as rags.

Maybe you have boxes or cabinets with mismatched dishes. How about old silverware and utensils you no longer use. Put them all in the donation box.

Have you been saving books and magazines that you plan to read or re-read some time in the future. If you have not read them in the last three years, do you really think you will read then in the next three? It is unlikely. I know you are saving many of them as references. With the Internet, you have all the reference material you will ever need right at your fingertips. Get rid of books and magazines. Put them in the donation box.

If you really cannot stand to give things away because it all has value, have a garage sale. Make it a challenge to have tons of stuff at your sale. When it is over, take whatever does not sell and donate it to a charity. Promise yourself you will get rid of the leftovers.

To sum up clutter, it robs valuable time from your life. It takes away some of your life energy and makes you wonder how you will ever organize it all. Do not organize it all; get rid of a lot of it.

You can often save money by spending $3 at the store rather than spending three hours looking for something you know you have, but cannot find. You end up buying the lost item anyway.

Get rid of what you do not want to make room for what you do want! Your stress will decrease automatically.

The Rising Popularity of Christian Music

Posted by admin in Music Hub

There is virtually no record of the earliest music of the Christian church except a few New Testament fragments of what are probably hymns. Some of these fragments are still sung as hymns today in the Orthodox Church, including “Awake, awake O sleeper” on the occasion of someone’s baptism.

Being Jewish, Jesus and his disciples would most likely have sung the psalms from memory. However, without a centralised music industry, the repertoire of ordinary people was much greater than it is today, so they probably knew other songs too. Early Christians continued to sing the psalms much as they were sung in the synagogues in the first century.

Aside from hymns taken from the Bible itself, the earliest hymn still in use today is probably O Gladsome Light (Greek, Phs Hilaron). In the fourth century, Basil the Great referred to it as already being a rather old hymn.

Some of the popularity of Arianism in the fourth century can be attributed to the catchy songs that the priest Arius composed in its support. The popularity of the songs helped increase the popularity of his teachings. Ephrem the Syrian composed a number of hymns later in the fourth century that supported what eventually came to be recognised as more orthodox doctrines.

Troparia and Kontakia are two early forms of hymns that became incorporated into the Church’s worship.

At the conclusion of the Fifth Ecumenical Council, Emperor Justinian I is reputed to have composed a hymn summarising the council’s conclusion, Only begotten Son. That hymn was since incorporated into the Divine Liturgy of John Chrysostom and is still widely sung today.

The tradition of Christian hymns in the English language is closely tied to Protestantism. Protestant hymns can range from the Reformation organ pieces of J. S. Bach to the American folk hymns found in The Sacred Harp. Martin Luther composed a number of hymns in the 16th century, reportedly borrowing some of their melodies from popular tavern drinking songs of that period.

Another famous hymn composer is Charles Wesley, brother of John Wesley. Some hymns, particularly Christmas carols, are widely embraced by various denominations while many hymns are restricted to certain religious traditions. In some cases this is due to doctrinal differences reflected in the words of the song but in many cases it is the result of tradition and the use of denominationally-produced or -approved hymnals.

The use of hymns was a factor in several historic schisms among Protestant denominations with more traditional members insisting on the use of only the psalms in the service.
