If you are reading this, you’re probably searching for a way to get control of your finances. The best way to do this is to develop a monthly budget and committing to it. A sound budget is an essential tool for managing money, one that has allowed me to survive even on limited funds. One of the most crucial things that I do every month is organise my monthly budget, and it has allowed me to systematically meet all expenses, grow my savings, and control debt.
I normally organise my budget for the coming month close to the end of the month. That gives me a heads up about what’s down the road. It’s not a good idea to produce a budget after getting paid because, too often, that flush feeling of having a paycheck results to nonessential and spontaneous spending before the paycheck ever reaches the bank.
Start your personal budget by listing all the things that must be paid that month like rent, electricity bills, insurance policies, loan repayments and telephone bills. These are the things I have pay to keep a comfortable roof over my head and continue earning money. I like to pad these necessities to make “money back” after paying the bills and, if costs increase unexpectedly, I’m always covered.
Next, my budget is subjected to a list of discretionary things I need to cover but could live without if absolutely unavoidable. For example, donations, credit card repayments and monthly sving deposits. These things are also needed, but in case of emergency I could put them off for a short time. By paying credit card companies the maximum instead of the minimum, I keep my credit score high and my debt low.
My budget does not include the cost of living such as food and entertainment. Ultimately, these items get covered by what’s left in the budget. Some months involve lots of beans and rice, slow-cooker meals, free or cheap entertainment, and only one inexpensive piece of clothing . This strategy of overseeing my monthly budget has worked out very well over the long term as long as I observe it scrupulously.

Between usual monthly bills and unpredicted expenses, it seemed I was constantly upside down on my budget. As soon as I got my pay, it was already spent. I got a stack of bills every month and put them off to the last minute, then did them all in a rush. As a solution I ended up borrowing money from the next paycheck just to make it through. It’s not that I didn’t make enough money, it’s that I didn’t know how to manage my budget. In the case of any emergency, left me even deeper in debt.
I am sure most of us have been in this position. We try to moderate our spending and be careful with our money, but long before month-end, the money is spent. Paying bills is a juggling act that most of us don’t have the time or energy to comprehend. There’s always one bill that was overlooked or delayed, one more expenditure we weren’t consenting for. With school supplies and fees for the kids, groceries, new tires for the car, and the raising cost of petrol, just making it from paycheck to paycheck is hard enough; saving money is out of the question. Meantime, debt is softly jamming up. How can I get my budget under control?

I don’t have to worry about paying any bills; I know my bills will be paid on time, and that I’ll have money in reserve for life’s little emergencies. Over the centuries, human beings have developed many techniques to gain access to their inner wisdom and improve learning.
One technique that many people have found very beneficial is to have an imaginary guide that they can call on for advice and insight.
A modern variation of this technique has been developed by intelligence researcher Dr. Win Wenger and it is detailed in his book “The Einstein Factor”
This exercise is sometimes called “Putting on the Expert’s Head”
This technique enables you to access some of the enormous untapped potential that resides in the mind of every individual. This technique can even accelerate your ability to develop a new skill. It gives you access to parts of yourself that you are normally not aware of.
It can improve your ability to come up with new creative ideas.
The first step is to decide what knowledge or skill you would like to develop in yourself. What are you interested in that you would like to do better? You might wish to improve your skill at archery, sculpture or painting, doing mathematics, or playing a musical instrument.
Once you have decided what skill or knowledge you would like to develop, take some time to think about those people you consider an expert in this chosen field. Whose skills do you admire? Who do you think of as a great role model and expert in the field?
The person need not be currently living. Before you move ahead with this exercise, you may wish to research the life of the person you have chosen.
You might even decide you want to see the world from the perspective of your favorite animal or bird, such as a wolf or an eagle.
When you are ready to do the Expert’s Head exercise, prepare yourself by deeply relaxing your body and your mind. Take some time to get comfortable in a place where you will not be disturbed. Internally scan your body for tension, and allow your muscles to relax. Breathe calmly and smoothly in a relaxed way.
Now think: is there a particular place where you would like to meet your imaginary expert? You might want to meet this guide in your own home, but feel free to imagine another site. For example, you could visualize meeting in a beautiful garden, in a forest, on top of a mountain, or some other location.
You can improve your ability to visualize imaginatively by speaking out loud your inner impressions to a tape recorder, or to another person. Eventually, even the slightest glimmer of imagination will be reinforced and amplified by consistent practice of this exercise.
If you are not yet able to easily imagine a location in which to meet your chosen expert, don’t worry. Simply move forward to the imagined encounter with this person, whenever you are ready.
Your imaginary encounter may go exactly as planned, or there may be surprises in store for you. Perhaps someone you weren’t expecting shows up. Perhaps your chosen expert does not want to participate. If no one appears in your mind’s imagination, ask for someone to come forward, and then wait.
When your imaginary guide appears, handle the encounter with as much politeness and respect as you would a real life encounter with a real person. Do you feel comfortable in the presence of this expert? Do you have the sense that the expert feels comfortable with you?
Even if these guides are figments of your inner mind, you still need to be sure you are accessing a part of yourself that wants to promote only the best for you.
If you get any sense of discomfort between you, thank the expert for coming, and politely dismiss him or her. Think of another expert you admire in your chosen field and create an imaginary encounter with that person. You may even have to create a totally fictitious character to be your imaginary expert.
Once you have established a meeting with your chosen expert, mentally picture yourself and your visiting expert standing facing each other in an attitude of great respect. Gently put your arms out and slowly remove the expert’s head from his or her body. Since this is only an imaginary person or animal, the head should come off quite easily.
Place the expert’s head above your own, facing the right way, and lower it over your own head. Now believe that you are looking out at the world through the eyes of your chosen expert, hearing through the expert’s ears, smelling through the expert’s nose.
Take the time to allow the expert’s mind to slowly merge with your own mind. Now gently pull the expert’s body towards you, and step into it. Feel as if it fits you perfectly. Feel that you have merged with the expert’s mind and body and can feel and do the same things.
When you feel that you are actually in the expert’s body, notice what seems different to you. Does the world look different in any way? Do any of your attitudes feel different? How does your body feel different? Can you feel the confident attitude of the expert? Memorize the sensation.
Focus on the differences you notice and start to talk about them out loud. Spend at least five minutes doing this step. When you have finished, gently step out of the borrowed imaginary body and carefully remove the expert’s head from you own. Respectfully return the head and body to the expert. Thank that person for allowing you to have this experience.
You can use the Expert’s Head technique to improve your skills at some desired activity, to develop new creative insights, or to accelerate your ability to learn to do something you have never done before.
First spend a few weeks performing the Expert’s Head exercise daily to familiarize yourself with it. Each time you do it, spend about 10 -15 minutes mentally being the character of the expert, wearing the expert’s head and body.
After about fifteen minutes, gently remove the expert’s head and step out of the expert’s body. Thank the expert for the use of his or her body, mind and talent. Ask the person to continue filling your mind with more of their expert knowledge and ability even when you are not practicing this exercise.
Before the experience starts to fade from your memory, spend a few minutes writing down or speaking out loud everything you can remember. Write down or speak everything you can remember that was really different when you were in the expert’s mind and body, rather than as yourself.
When you wish to improve a particular skill, first spend about 15 minutes mentally doing it as yourself. Then slip into the expert’s head and body to continue the exercise in real life for another fifteen to thirty minutes. If you repeat this process about three times a day, you will experience a greatly accelerated ability to master the skills you desire.
Please realize that advice and knowledge received in this manner is not infallible. Do not feel obligated to act on any advice received from your inner dialogue with your imagined guides unless you are absolutely convinced it is appropriate for you at this time.
This technique can greatly increase access to your inner creativity and wisdom, but you will still need to make informed and reasoned decisions about what you do.

Jim, a 42-year old engineer was teaching his eight-year-old son how to fly a radio-controlled airplane. As the airplane was taking off, Jim instructed his son to push the control stick on the radio to the right. He did and the airplane turned to the right.
This was repeated several more times until the airplane turned full circle toward the son, ready to land. “Push the stick to the right,” said Jim. This time, however, the plane turned left. “Push the stick left,” Jim said. Now the plane turned right, as if it suddenly had a mind of its own.
“I’m confused,” said the son. “How do I know which way to push the stick when the plane behaves differently depending on if it’s flying away from me or toward me?”
“It’s simple,” said Jim. “Simply imagine you’re in the plane and push the stick accordingly.” This cured the problem.
What a great lesson in empathy - the ability to experience the world from another perspective, often the perspective of another person.
As an anonymous English author wrote: “To empathize is to see with the eyes of another, to hear with the ears of another, and to feel with the heart of another.”
Why is empathy important? The real world bottom line is that lack of empathy leads to poor communication and a failing to understand others. Lack of empathy leads to all sorts of problems in our world. Nations go to war, people are killed, couples divorce - all for a lack of empathy and understanding.
It is natural to become angry when frustrated or irritated with people who do or say things at variance with our worldview.
To manage anger, it often helps to see our anger as a combination of their behavior and our lack of empathy. While we cannot control other’s thoughts, feelings or behaviors, we most certainly can increase our empathy skills.
To control our anger with increased empathy, three basic skills are required: listening, self-awareness and acceptance.
Empathic listening is a type of listening that goes further than ordinary listening. This type of listening uses another person’s point of view to see the world as others see it. It provides a higher level of understanding of how others feel.
Self-awareness occurs as you better understand your own thoughts and feelings. You are then better able to understand the thoughts and feelings of someone else. The more open we are to our own feelings, the more skilled we become at reading someone else’s feelings, and generally the less angry we feel toward them.
Acceptance, on the other hand, is the ability to see that others have a right to their “ridiculous” feelings. We must allow people to have feelings without telling them how they should feel. W cannot stop others from having feelings.
Empathic people understand that feelings are difficult to control. When we accept others as they are, it simply means that we understand that they are doing the best they can at the time. Remember, if they could do any better, they probably would.
Acceptance of others’ feelings is not easy when people act differently than we do. We all have difficulty with those who are different. By learning the skill of empathy, we will be better able to understand ourselves and others.
Here are five simple rules to be more empathetic.
1. Pay attention to the feelings that others express. Watch for both verbal and nonverbal clues. Try to understand the message behind the words and actions.
2. Place the feelings of other’s ahead of your own. Put aside your own needs and ideas long enough to listen to another’s point of view.
3. Communicate your understanding. Respond or give answers to the messages you receive to show you understand them.
4. Do not interrupt. Let speakers finish what they are saying before you talk.
5. Ask for more information. If you still don’t understand, ask more questions until you fully understand.
